Programmer's Pick

If you like your Victorian England with a side of gallows humor and a barrel or two of mistaken identity, The Wrong Box delivers. The cast is stacked with British comedy royalty, and the script practically winks at every twist of the knife—or barrel lid.

Overview

Set in Victorian England, The Wrong Box opens on a morbidly comic premise: decades earlier, a group of boys entered a tontine—an investment where the last living member claims the whole pot. Now, sixty-three years later, only two brothers, Masterman and Joseph Finsbury, remain. Not having spoken in years, Masterman sends his grandson Michael to fetch Joseph, setting off a chain of misunderstandings, shifting alliances, and comic complications as various family members, acquaintances, and opportunists plot their own routes to potential wealth. With its eccentric characters and a London setting full of mishaps and mistaken identities, the film revels in British dark humor and period absurdity, all revolving around a fortune that may end up in the least expected hands.
