Quick Answer

What is Unhinged about?

Unhinged is a 1982 American horror film directed by Don Gronquist about three college students who, after a car crash in rural Washington, take refuge in an isolated mansion with unsettling hosts.

Programmer's Pick

Few 'video nasties' lean this hard into the uneasy hush of rural Gothic. Unhinged turns that old 'hospitality in the woods' setup into a slow-burn cocktail of paranoia, man-hating matriarchs, and music festival dreams gone sour.

Overview

Three college friends—Terry, Nancy, and Gloria—set out for a music festival in rural Washington, only to have their road trip interrupted by a violent storm that leads to a car crash. Awakening injured and stranded, the trio finds sanctuary in a remote mansion owned by the enigmatic Penrose family: Marion, her controlling mother, and the groundskeeper, Norman. With Gloria seriously hurt and the storm raging outside, the women are invited to stay the night, but there is little comfort to be found. As the Penroses' hospitality becomes increasingly peculiar, and with news reports of local disappearances echoing in the background, it becomes clear that not all is as it seems inside the decrepit estate. This is a taut backwoods slasher where isolation breeds suspicion.

Why This Matters

Produced independently on a modest budget in Portland and featuring Gus Van Sant as a location scout, this slasher became notorious after being included on the UK's 'video nasties' list, prompting increased censorship actions by the BBFC and government seizures in the mid-1980s.
