Quick Answer

What is It's Alive III: Island of the Alive about?

It's Alive III: Island of the Alive is a 1987 American horror and science fiction film directed by Larry Cohen about mutant babies quarantined on a deserted island as a father fights for his son's survival against public fear and exploitation.

Programmer's Pick

Larry Cohen doesn't just recycle the mutant baby premise—he escalates it into a scathing social satire about fear, responsibility, and the monsters we create. Throw in courtroom theatrics and a remote island setting, and you get a sequel that's as weirdly thoughtful as it is gory.

Overview

Years after the chaos of the previous films, the world is once again confronted with the birth of a mutant baby. In a tense opening, a woman in labor gives birth to a mutated child in a taxi, only for violence to erupt as the authorities intervene. The media and legal system quickly swoop in, casting the mutants as public enemies. Stephen Jarvis, the father of one such child, pleads in court to spare his son’s life and confronts a society eager to erase the evidence of its own mistakes. Ultimately, the court orders the mutant babies to be quarantined on a deserted island, setting the stage for a battle of survival, parental loyalty, and moral ambiguity.
