Overview

At Le Hollandais, an opulent restaurant commandeered by the brutish crime boss Albert Spica, nightly excess is matched only by public displays of humiliation and abuse. Spica’s refined but miserable wife, Georgina, endures her husband's grotesque appetites and cruelty, until a chance for tenderness appears in the form of Michael, a quiet bookshop owner and regular patron. As the staff and setting conspire to shelter the lovers’ dangerous liaison, the boundaries between passion, power, and revenge blur beneath the decadent banquets and simmering tension. A visually sumptuous, audaciously provocative satire, Peter Greenaway’s film serves up sex, brutality, and gourmet allegory with theatrical flair.
