Programmer's Pick

Drum doesn’t pull punches—literally or figuratively. With Pam Grier in the mix and a plot that swirls through brothels, plantations, and bare-knuckle boxing rings, this is blaxploitation with a Southern gothic twist.

Overview

Born to a white prostitute and raised by her black lover, Drum grows up in 1860s Louisiana where his strength in brutal bare-knuckle boxing makes him both valuable and vulnerable. Forced to fight other slaves for the perverse amusement of wealthy owners, Drum becomes the object of obsession for the manipulative Bernard DeMarigny, whose advances he spurns at great personal risk. Sold along with his friend Blaise to plantation owner Hammond Maxwell, Drum enters a simmering world of power, jealousy, and violence. The arrival of Regine, purchased as Maxwell’s bed-wench, stirs further tension among the household and sets the stage for a collision between desire, resentment, and survival. The film’s setup promises a volatile mix of exploitation, hixploitation, and historical drama.
