Quick Answer

What is Women in Revolt about?

Women in Revolt is a 1971 American comedy-drama directed by Paul Morrissey about three disillusioned women in New York City who form a radical feminist group called P.I.G. in an attempt to challenge male dominance and reinvent their lives.

Programmer's Pick

With Warhol superstars in full anarchic regalia, Women in Revolt skewers both patriarchy and the performance of rebellion. Morrissey’s camera revels in drag, neurosis, and sexual discord, making this a prime artifact of underground cinema’s most misbehaved era.

Overview

Set against the gritty backdrop of New York City, Women in Revolt follows Candy, Jackie, and Holly—three disaffected women, each with her own baggage—who unite to form the militant feminist collective P.I.G. (Politically Involved Girls). Candy, an unhappy heiress, Jackie, a frustrated intellectual and teacher, and Holly, a mercurial model, each bring their unique perspectives and personal struggles to this new movement. With sharp satire and a dose of downtown camp, the film explores their quest for liberation as they try to mount a revolutionary challenge to male-dominated society. Morrissey’s film blends gender-bending performances, dark humor, and a raw look at the pitfalls and contradictions of radical activism.
