Programmer's Pick

Kathy Ireland's Wanda is the queen of big glasses and bigger misadventures, bringing a uniquely awkward charm to the lost world of Atlantis. Albert Pyun's low-budget vision delivers steampunk touches and psychotronic energy, all with a wink at sci-fi conventions. It’s a fish-out-of-water tale where the fish wears sneakers and a perpetual look of surprise.

Overview

Wanda Saknussemm is a socially awkward young woman with oversized glasses and a notably squeaky voice, living an unremarkable life in Los Angeles. After her boyfriend dumps her for lacking adventure, Wanda receives a letter informing her that her archaeologist father has apparently perished after falling into a bottomless pit in Africa. Driven by the mystery and her father's legacy, she travels to Zamboanga. While sorting through his belongings, Wanda uncovers notes about Atlantis, rumored to have been created by a long-crashed alien ship at the Earth's core. Her curiosity soon leads her to a hidden chamber beneath her father's apartment, setting the stage for an accidental journey into an underground world.

Why Cult

Nerdy Heroine Odyssey

Wanda Saknussemm’s journey from diner-bound misfit to underground adventurer gives this film a quirky, off-center protagonist rarely seen in sci-fi fare.

Underground Atlantis

Atlantis is reimagined as a hidden civilization deep within the Earth, complete with its own politics, crime lords, and suspicion of surface dwellers.

Psychotronic Steampunk Vibes

The film’s low-budget aesthetic blends psychotronic energy and steampunk touches, giving this lost world a style all its own.

Sci-Fi Parody Elements

Winking at its genre roots, the movie isn’t afraid to play up the comedy and parody in its depiction of aliens and lost civilizations.
