Programmer's Pick

Turkey Shoot is the kind of dystopian pulp that doesn’t just flirt with bad taste—it marries it in a mass wedding of machetes, dark satire, and splattery excess. Brian Trenchard-Smith gleefully cranks up the sadism and social commentary, making this a true marathon for fans of exploitation with political bite.

Overview

Set in the then-future year of 1995, Turkey Shoot drops viewers into a world ruled by a totalitarian regime that deems anyone a 'social deviant' worthy of incarceration in brutal re-education camps. At Camp 47, innocent shopkeeper Chris Walters, suspected prostitute Rita Daniels, and political dissident Paul Anders find themselves at the mercy of the sadistic Camp Master Charles Thatcher and his equally cruel guards. The new inmates are quickly subjected to inhuman treatment and violence, with Chris narrowly avoiding assault and Paul being punished for showing compassion. As escape seems impossible and the regime’s cruelty intensifies, the prisoners face a grim fight for survival in an environment designed to crush dissent and humanity.

Why This Matters

Turkey Shoot is notable for its cross-genre approach, blending dystopian themes with action and exploitation elements, and for launching a series of collaborations between director Brian Trenchard-Smith and producer Antony I. Ginnane. Its troubled production led to significant rewrites and second unit direction by executive producer David Hemmings.
