Programmer's Pick

If your taste runs to jet-black British wit and sexual power plays, Mr. Sloane is your cup of arsenic-laced tea. Watching a pink Pontiac, leather uniforms, and sibling rivalry combust in the sleepy suburbs is worth a front row seat. Just don’t expect anyone to come out clean.

Overview

Entertaining Mr. Sloane is a biting black comedy set in the London suburbs, where loneliness and desire intertwine with dangerous consequences. Kath, an isolated middle-aged woman, lives with her elderly father Kemp and leads a mundane existence until she encounters the enigmatic and alluring Mr. Sloane in a cemetery. Drawn to his charm, Kath invites Sloane to be her lodger, soon involving him in a web of seduction. Her brother Ed, closeted and ambitious, enlists Sloane as his chauffeur, dressing him in a leather uniform and parading him around in a flamboyant pink convertible. As Sloane ingratiates himself into their lives, secrets, power games, and a mysterious past threaten to upend the household. The film revels in themes of sexuality, manipulation, and dark humor, challenging taboos with its sharply drawn, morally ambiguous characters.
