Programmer's Pick

Ozploitation goes bush with feminist teeth: this isn’t your average Western, but a raw, experimental journey through freedom, repression, and revenge. Come for the corsets and horseback riding, stay for the bush survival and body paint.

Overview

Set against the harsh backdrop of colonial Australia, Journey Among Women follows Elizabeth Harrington, the privileged daughter of a judge advocate, as she chooses to aid female convicts suffering under appalling conditions. Together, the women orchestrate a daring escape into the unforgiving bush, accompanied by Elizabeth, who abandons her life of privilege and her engagement to Captain McEwan. The group’s survival hinges on Kameragul, an Aboriginal girl who teaches them how to endure the wilderness, though hardship and malnutrition quickly take their toll. As these disparate women struggle to survive, bond, and challenge the repressive forces that shaped their lives, the film explores themes of power, resilience, and the possibility of forging new identities far from the reach of colonial society.
