Quick Answer

What is The Night Walker about?

The Night Walker is a 1964 American horror, mystery, and thriller film directed by William Castle about a woman haunted by recurring nightmares seemingly instigated by her late husband, who was supposedly killed in a fire.

Programmer's Pick

William Castle spins a Grand Dame Guignol yarn with Barbara Stanwyck at the center of a nightmare mansion, where synchronized clocks and tape recorders are the least disturbing fixtures. No one tapes marital discord quite like Castle—especially when Robert Bloch writes the script.

Overview

Irene Trent lives under the suffocating control of her blind, possessive millionaire husband, Howard, in a mansion filled with synchronized cuckoo clocks and secret tape recordings. Howard's obsessive jealousy keeps Irene isolated, her only visitor being his attorney, Barry Morland. While Howard spends his days locked away in his mysterious laboratory, Irene endures a life of fear and repression, longing for escape. Her reality grows increasingly unstable as she is plagued by vivid, recurring nightmares that blur the boundaries between sleep and waking life. The film sets a tense, claustrophobic tone, drawing viewers into Irene’s psychological torment and the eerie confines of her gilded prison.
