Programmer's Pick

Barbara Steele does double duty as both blushing bride and unhinged witch, while Michael Reeves serves up gothic chills with a wink. Between peeping hotel clerks and supernatural resurrections, this is cult Euro-horror at its oddball best.

Overview

Set in the misty Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania, The She Beast opens with the eccentric, alcoholic Count Von Helsing recounting a sinister local legend: the witch Bardella, executed by a hysterical congregation centuries ago, placed a lasting curse on the region. When a young English couple arrive for their honeymoon, their plans for a restful getaway are quickly complicated by the village’s strange customs, suspicious townsfolk, and supernatural overtones. With unsettling figures like hotelier Ladislav Groper and the ever-watchful Von Helsing, the film blends gothic horror with sly comedy, setting up a clash between old-world curses and modern-day skepticism—all before the true horror awakens.
