1961 · 1h 30m · NR · Drama · IMDB TMDB

Quick Answer

What is Victim about?

Victim is a 1961 United Kingdom drama film directed by Basil Dearden about a respected lawyer who confronts a blackmail scheme preying on gay men under Britain's anti-sodomy laws.

Programmer's Pick

Victim doesn't just tiptoe around its subject—it charges into the moral quagmire of blackmail and homophobia in postwar Britain. Dirk Bogarde delivers a performance as tightly wound as the era's legal codes, while the film exposes the cruel mechanics of extortion targeting gay men. This is a rare drama that shows both the personal and institutional stakes with unflinching clarity.

Overview

Melville Farr, a successful London barrister poised for high honors, receives a call from Jack Barrett, a young gay man with whom Farr once shared a romantic friendship. Though married to Laura and striving to keep his private life private, Farr assumes Barrett is attempting to blackmail him and rebuffs his pleas. In reality, Barrett is desperate for help after being targeted by blackmailers who possess an incriminating photograph of the two men together. With his career and personal life on the line in a society hostile to homosexuality, Farr faces a dilemma that threatens everything he has built. The film unfolds as a psychological drama exploring secrecy, vulnerability, and the costs of integrity in 1960s England.
