The Legacy is a 1978 United Kingdom/United States horror film directed by Richard Marquand about a couple lured to an English country estate, where they and several other guests are entangled in a deadly contest for an ominous inheritance.

Programmer's Pick

Where Gothic grandeur meets late-'70s occult anxiety, The Legacy serves up stately British menace with a transatlantic twist. Between the mysterious retainer, a houseful of questionable heirs, and genre royalty Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott, this is inheritance horror at its most stylishly morbid.

Overview

Maggie Walsh and her boyfriend Pete Danner, interior decorators from Los Angeles, receive an enticing offer from an anonymous British client that leads them overseas. After a sudden tragedy frees them from their commitments, they fly to England and soon find themselves in a minor car accident with Jason Mountolive, who invites them to his sprawling country estate, Ravenhurst. There, they're introduced to Nurse Adams and discover they've joined a select group of guests—all potential heirs to Mountolive’s wealth. As Maggie and Pete settle in among the eclectic company, the couple senses they’ve been chosen for more than just a job and that the estate holds secrets that may prove perilous. The film establishes a tense, atmospheric setup, blending country manor intrigue with an undercurrent of supernatural dread.
