Overview

When a wealthy industrialist is found murdered in Sparta, Mississippi, suspicion falls on Virgil Tibbs, a black man waiting at the train station with a fat wallet. The local police, led by Chief Bill Gillespie, quickly arrest Tibbs, only to discover he is actually a homicide detective from Philadelphia. Though initially eager to leave the prejudiced small town behind, Tibbs is asked by his own chief to stay and assist with the investigation. Reluctantly, Tibbs works alongside the openly hostile Gillespie to untangle the murder case, navigating both the mounting evidence and the pervasive racism of the Deep South. This tense police procedural draws its suspense not only from the central mystery, but also from the charged social dynamics at play.
